Gold Prices Rise Ahead of US Inflation Data
September CPI arrives October 14, before the Fed's October meeting. A gold rebound leaves mining shareholders with costs to check.

CME's gold futures page showed a rise on Tuesday, October 13. At 6:51:02 a.m. CT that morning, the exchange page quoted its displayed contract at US$4,209.50 an ounce, up on the session. InvestorsHub's October 13 report on Yahoo Finance attributed bullion's advance to lower oil prices and dollar weakness. For those of us holding bullion, easing energy pressure offers a possible route to less inflation and less pressure for higher interest rates. Gold pays no interest, so a reduction in the income available from competing assets could help it. Can that relief survive the inflation report?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics calendar schedules September consumer price data for October 14 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time. That report measures September, so Tuesday's oil retreat cannot rewrite the month it covers. We will be looking for evidence that price pressure is easing across the economy. A softer reading could reduce the case for further tightening; persistent inflation could strengthen it and reverse the relief in bullion. If you are adding gold ahead of the release, you are taking a view on that policy response as well as on the metal.
Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack gave us a fresh reason to keep that risk in view. In her October 12 speech, she said she believes “a restrictive policy stance” will be needed, while stressing that her views are her own and the course depends on economic conditions. She describes how policy responds to changing data rather than committing to a decision. The Fed's calendar puts the next meeting on October 27 and 28. We followed the competition from interest-bearing assets in Gold and Silver Lose Ground as Yields Rise; this week's inflation release gives us the next evidence to weigh against that rate risk.
If you own the miners, the upside is a stronger selling price while costs and production hold. The risk is paying for a wider margin before the accounts show it. Agnico Eagle, AEM on the NYSE and TSX, has a dated check ahead: its September 28 notice schedules third-quarter results after normal trading hours on October 28. Management's call follows on October 29 at 11 a.m. EDT, according to that notice. We will compare realized gold prices with costs and output, because a morning bullion quote cannot establish what a producer earned across a quarter. Cheaper oil would also have to reach reported expenses before we count it as a margin gain.
We will watch CPI on October 14, the Fed's decision on October 28, and Agnico's results and call on October 28 and 29.
