Pioneer Minerals, PMM on the ASX, has appointed Andes Exploration to manage exploration and project activities at San Francisco in Argentina, according to its company announcement, reviewed on October 13, 2026. Pioneer identifies Andes leader Leandro Sastre Salim as a former Barrick Gold vice-president of exploration for Latin America and Asia-Pacific. His role in this engagement is to provide strategic exploration direction and technical oversight. Andes describes itself as a geological consultancy that plans exploration campaigns and builds geological models. For those of us watching PMM, the appointment puts a local technical team behind the next target-selection decisions.

What can that team change before a drill rig arrives? Pioneer says Andes has begun reviewing historical surface geochemistry and building a three-dimensional model of the San Francisco breccia pipe, a geological body containing broken rock fragments. The review is intended to prioritise gold, copper and silver anomalies, while the model will help assess the shape of the known mineralised system and possible extensions. We see the potential benefit in choosing where to spend exploration money: the team can use existing information to narrow the areas requiring further investigation. You still need drilling to test those interpretations, because a model built from historical information cannot establish what an untested extension contains.

The rights you would be backing also remain conditional. Pioneer's option-acquisition disclosure, listed on October 9 in its ABN Newswire news index, describes staged options to acquire the San Francisco and José Mario concessions and an interest in the adjoining El Tapau permits. Completion is subject to the staged arrangements and shareholder approval. We would assess the appointment alongside that transaction status, because hiring a technical team does not complete the acquisition. If you own PMM, the upside is a better basis for deciding which targets deserve follow-up work; the risk is that geological progress runs ahead of the steps required to secure the project interests.

The same acquisition disclosure reported firm commitments to raise A$1.8 million before costs, through convertible loans and a placement, subject to shareholder approval. We would treat that as proposed funding until Pioneer confirms the relevant approvals and receipt of funds. The amount committed also gives you no basis to assume an unlimited drilling program: the appointment announcement describes work intended to determine subsequent drilling's scope and priorities. If financing proceeds through additional share issues, your percentage ownership would fall unless you participate. We set out the earnings checks for gold producers in Gold Prices Rise Ahead of US Inflation Data; with PMM, we are weighing the exploration plan before new drilling tests its targets.

We will revisit PMM by October 31 for shareholder approval and funding updates and a defined fieldwork or drilling plan.
