Albemarle Cuts Spending as Lithium Earnings Rise
Albemarle's Q3 lithium pricing lifted earnings and cash flow, but its outlook warns of weaker fourth-quarter margins as capital spending falls.

Albemarle (NYSE: ALB) reported US$297 million in third-quarter net income, according to its November 4, 2026 results release. It also cut this year's capital spending forecast to US$300 million to US$350 million, from approximately US$500 million. For ALB holders, stronger lithium earnings and a smaller investment bill improve the cash picture. We would weigh that improvement against the company's warning that lithium margins will weaken in the final quarter.
Energy Storage's reported average realized price rose to US$20.02 per kilogram of lithium carbonate equivalent, from US$10.28 a year earlier, according to the quarterly operating table. That measure combines lithium salts and spodumene sales on an equivalent basis. Sales volumes fell about 19% from the prior-year quarter, when inventory destocking and unusually high spodumene shipments had lifted deliveries. Segment adjusted EBITDA nevertheless rose to US$560 million from US$124 million. If you own ALB for a lithium recovery, this quarter shows how improved pricing can lift earnings even when the volume comparison goes against you.
The next quarter brings a tougher cost comparison. Albemarle's November 4 outlook expects Energy Storage sales and adjusted EBITDA to decline sequentially because of lower market pricing, with steady sales volumes. It also expects margins to fall as higher-cost spodumene inventory purchased in earlier periods is consumed. We should therefore resist carrying the latest quarterly profit forward unchanged. Higher selling prices helped the reported quarter, but the cost of material moving through the plants can still squeeze the next one.
The explicit earnings outlook increase is in Specialties, where full-year adjusted EBITDA is now expected at US$350 million to US$375 million, the results announcement says. The previous range was US$275 million to US$325 million. Improved pricing and productivity support that increase. Separately, management attributes the lower capital budget to capital efficiency and resequencing some early-stage projects. You get a smaller near-term spending commitment, but the release gives us reason to distinguish permanent efficiencies from expenditure moved to another period.
Third-quarter operating cash flow was US$406 million, while reported non-GAAP free cash flow was US$325 million. The November 4 release says a cash dividend from the Talison joint venture supported cash conversion and partly offset working-capital timing effects. How much of that cash performance can repeat? We would keep the dividend and working-capital timing beside the headline figure when judging cash generation. In Fitch Upgrades Albemarle to BBB With Stable Outlook, we covered the credit outlook. Today's operating update lets you test whether improved lithium earnings keep converting into cash as higher-cost inventory is consumed.
Our next checkpoint is the November 5, 2026 earnings call at 8 a.m. EST, when we will look for detail on fourth-quarter margins and the timing of rescheduled capital spending.
