MP Materials said on September 24 that its American-made magnets are installed in a General Motors traction motor, showing the assembly in a company post. For you if you own MP, a magnet inside a GM motor is a more concrete step than a magnet on a factory bench. The post gives no vehicle model, shipment quantity or production date, so today's evidence has a clear boundary.
GM's December 9, 2021 announcement set out the plan: MP would turn rare earths from Mountain Pass into finished magnets for GM electric motors. It named several intended vehicles and described a gradual production ramp. What has changed since that agreement? MP can now show a magnet installed in the kind of motor the deal was built to serve. That supports the case that its manufacturing work has reached customer hardware. GM's old announcement cannot tell us whether this particular motor is headed for a production vehicle.
MP's January 22, 2025 release said its Fort Worth plant had begun trial production of automotive grade magnets and was targeting about 1,000 metric tons of finished magnets a year. That was a capacity ambition; accepted GM deliveries still needed their own disclosure. In results released August 6, MP said further magnet deliveries had advanced customer qualification and regulatory testing. The results did not identify GM as the customer for those deliveries. Today's post places MP's magnets in a GM motor, but gives no qualification decision.
The earnings line deserves the same care. MP reported $16.5 million of Magnetics segment revenue for the quarter ended June 30 in its August 6 results. That is a segment total; the company gave no GM magnet shipment figure in that release. If MP can turn this motor installation into regular accepted deliveries, you would own a business selling a manufactured component as well as rare earth materials. The risk is that qualification, plant output and GM's vehicle schedule move on different clocks. A motor image cannot tell us how many magnets the plant can ship at the quality an automaker will accept.
Readers who followed MP's ownership question in The Three Percent Beijing Is Buying have a new test: how many finished magnets can the company sell to GM? We still need commercial volume to judge how much of the investment in Fort Worth earns a return. The September 24 post says nothing about a purchase order, payment or which GM vehicle uses this motor. For shareholders, the next useful document is a company result that separates shipped magnets from the broader Magnetics segment, followed by GM identifying a vehicle using them. Until then, the motor is evidence of integration, with the size of the business still to prove.
When MP reports the quarter ending September 30, watch for commercial magnet shipment volume; by year-end, watch for GM to name a production vehicle using MP's magnets.
