LS MnM Weighs Further Copper Concentrate Cuts
Fastmarkets reports a proposed 15% intake cut for 2027, but LS MnM says targets remain unset. Lower smelter demand could weaken miners' fee advantage.

LS MnM is considering further cuts to copper concentrate purchases but has set no reduction target for 2027, the company told Fastmarkets in a report published October 26, 2026. Mining sources described a roughly 15% reduction tied to maintenance. For those of us holding copper miners, the distinction affects how much lost demand for mine feed we can reasonably put into next year's earnings assumptions.
The reported baseline needs care. Mining sources put next year's intake at 1.4 million tonnes, against a budget of 1.65 million tonnes for this year. That compares a proposed level with a budget, while LS MnM told Fastmarkets it was already operating with lower intake than usual. Fastmarkets understands that both Onsan smelting lines are scheduled for maintenance next year, but the company's response supplies no scale or timing for adjustments. We therefore cannot describe the reported percentage as a confirmed decline from actual purchases, or assign it to particular months.
What would fewer concentrate purchases change for you as a mine shareholder? Concentrate is the mineral-rich feed sent to smelters, and treatment charges are part of what miners pay to have it processed. Less buying would ease competition for that feed, all else equal, giving processors more room to seek higher charges. For a miner selling on those terms, higher deductions would reduce receipts. Fastmarkets describes LS MnM as mainly a long-term contract buyer with little spot purchasing, so the contracts affected and the timing of negotiations would determine where that pressure appeared.
That possibility puts a limit on assuming today's favourable concentrate terms continue indefinitely. We followed the seller's advantage in Antofagasta Gets Record Copper Terms, Sources Say. A buyer taking less material could weaken that advantage, but one smelter's proposed reduction does not establish a market-wide settlement. LS MnM's response also says further production cuts would likely be unavoidable if current market conditions persist. We would treat that as a conditional warning while waiting for its business plan, rather than enter the mining sources' estimate as committed purchasing guidance.
Nor can we turn the reported intake percentage into the same reduction in refined copper supply. LS MnM told Fastmarkets that lower intake would affect cathode and sulphuric acid production, but the extent remained undetermined. It also intends to maximize recycled feed within operating capacity. Its own circular-economy page, checked October 26, describes increasing scrap use alongside concentrate procurement. For your copper exposure, that leaves separate questions: how much mine feed the smelter buys, and how much finished metal it ultimately supplies.
By October 31, our next review date rather than a company deadline, we will watch for LS MnM's actual purchase baseline, maintenance dates and finalized intake plan; Fastmarkets reports no timetable for those details.
