Codelco Sets US$350 Europe Premium, Bloomberg Says
Bloomberg reports a record copper premium for Codelco's 2027 European sales, adding a charge above LME prices for the customers covered.

Codelco has set a record US$350 per tonne premium for European copper supplies, according to an October 20, 2026 Bloomberg report. The terms cover 2027 deliveries and were set in negotiations with some European customers this week, the report said, citing a person familiar with the discussions. We have not read a Codelco sales notice or the contracts, so the terms remain Bloomberg's sourced account.
The premium is added to the London Metal Exchange copper price. As the LME's pricing guide explains, physical contracts combine a reference price with premiums or discounts reflecting the product and delivery terms. At an unchanged benchmark, the reported surcharge adds US$350 to the buyer's bill for each tonne covered. That figure is the premium itself, rather than the total copper price or a measure of the annual increase. For you assessing a producer's realized selling price, the exchange quotation therefore leaves part of the sale unpriced.
This takes us beyond the reported concentrate auctions in Antofagasta Gets Record Copper Terms, Sources Say. Codelco's own sales explainer distinguishes cathodes, which can command a premium, from concentrate that still needs smelting and refining. Concentrate sales carry negotiated treatment and refining charges to cover that processing. Today's new fact is a European delivery premium for next year's business. It gives us another part of copper's commercial terms to assess, with a different product stage and pricing mechanism from the auctions we covered.
How much reaches the shares you own? For holders of Antofagasta, LON: ANTO, the company's October 15 production report attributed part of its sequential decline in quarterly cash costs before by-product credits to lower treatment charges. That is a documented benefit from processing terms. Codelco's reported European premium gives us no basis to apply the same surcharge to Antofagasta's sales. We would favour producers whose disclosed sales mix and newly negotiated contracts support better receipts, while keeping delivery costs, production and contract coverage beside the headline premium.
For European buyers taking the reported terms, the premium forms an additional cost above the benchmark. The LME guide says hedging the reference price can leave some premium exposure uncovered, so a benchmark hedge alone does not necessarily fix the full purchase price. For producers, Codelco's explainer also links premiums to logistics and supplying metal at the customer's requested location; the surcharge cannot all be treated as profit. Bloomberg's accessible account gives no contracted tonnage, so we cannot turn the reported rate into a company revenue forecast.
We will watch for disclosed contract volumes and comparable European settlements through the end of October, before assessing the receipts from 2027 deliveries.
