Warsh Plans Fewer Fed Rate-Setting Meetings
The Fed will retain eight annual meetings, but reserve time for strategy from autumn 2027. Gold holders face fewer scheduled rate decisions.

The Federal Reserve will reserve one of its eight annual meetings for monetary policy strategy starting in autumn 2027, Chairman Kevin Warsh announced in his October 28, 2026 opening statement. That leaves seven regular policy-setting meetings next year. Warsh expects two strategy meetings and six policy-setting meetings in 2028, while retaining eight meetings overall. For your gold and miner holdings, the scheduled opportunities for a rate decision will change.
For the strategy session, Warsh anticipates neither a federal funds rate vote nor a policy statement. The Fed's tentative 2027 calendar, announced September 5, 2025, lists eight meetings during that year, but does not designate one for strategy. His announcement does not identify it either. We therefore cannot assign the change to a particular date or calculate the gap between the policy meetings surrounding it. A meeting on the calendar will no longer necessarily mean a scheduled rate decision.
Which Fed dates should you plan around if you hold gold? Once the strategy date is identified, you can distinguish it from the remaining rate-setting sessions. But fewer scheduled decisions offer no guarantee of smaller price moves between them. The Fed's meeting-calendar page says it also holds other meetings as needed. Economic releases can still change investors' expectations for interest rates before policymakers next vote, so we would not treat a strategy session as the beginning of a protected holding period.
For miners, the timetable also separates the next scheduled policy decision from the financing conditions a business actually faces. As the Fed's explanation of monetary policy describes, changes in the federal funds rate affect other interest rates, exchange rates and credit. A miner seeking debt still faces the terms lenders offer when it needs the money. If you own a company with borrowing to refinance, a strategy meeting gives you no assurance that its borrowing costs will stand still until the next rate-setting session.
In Fed Holds Rates With Two Votes for a Hike, we covered today's decision and the disagreement over whether rates should rise. This announcement changes the future schedule rather than resolving that disagreement. Warsh says the reserved meetings will allow longer-term strategic deliberations. We would assess what those discussions produce before assuming they favour easier money or stronger gold prices. The announcement supplies no direction for the next rate move.
We will watch the December 8-9, 2026 FOMC meeting, listed on the Fed's calendar, for the next policy decision, and the Fed's designation of the strategy session before the new format begins in autumn 2027.
